An important Jewish text tells us that "It is not expected of you to complete the entire work. But you are not free to refrain from the matter." (Pirkei Avos 2:21) I had held this concept close for many years, but let it slip away during these past ten or so. Because I think there is great wisdom in this idea, I want to share with you both why I held it close and why I let it go. Finally, this blog is my attempt to not refrain from "the matter," the critical work of Tikkun Olam, of repairing the fabric of the world even as forces have gathered in the United States that are happily shredding it.
So, my friends and colleagues, be prepared to dialogue with me, to explore and challenge and re-think ideas about the good society, what it means to be an activist, how to stay engaged when reality seems to want us to just shut up and go away.
